About Larnaca
The Greeks founded Larnaca back during the 14th century, and is called Kition or Citium in Latin. Kittim, a biblical name, was derived from the word Citium, and was used in relation to Cyprus a lot, and also by Jews in referring to the Romans and Greeks. Larnaca is commonly reefed to as Skala, which means landing stage or ladder, this is in reference to the historic significance of its important port and the town.
Like the majority of Cypriote cities, the city of Kition was under the Achaemenid or Persian Empire. During 450 BC, Cimon, an Athenian general, died while out at sea trying to defend Citium in an important battle against the Persians. From his deathbed, the general told his officers to hide the fact about his death, form the Persians and their allies. There is a famous quote by Cimon which goes "Even in death he was victorious". His statue known as "Kimon (Cimon) the Athenian" is located on the seaside promenade in modern Larnaca.
Just as other places in Cyprus, it has endured earthquakes many times, and during the medieval period when the harbor was full of silt (this was caused by overgrazing and deforesting effects) many people moved into Larnaca, farther south on the seafront. The citadel and harbor is now gone. Remnants still stand of the circuit wall along with a sanctuary with a number of terra-cotta offerings. A good-size cemetery has been a source of loot for illegal excavations for over a century. Anywhere you dig in the area located between the tennis club to beyond the Chrysopolittissa church will uncover proof of previous civilizations. Most of the finds that are close to the top are Venetian and Roman. Go to the museum near the Terra Santa Convent if you want to view a number of exhibits, but you can also have fun digging in the yard behind it and Ali Baba's jars. The fort located on the seafront in Larnaca has been opened more for improved viewing through removing the Megalos Pefkos along with some illicit restaurants run by refugees, from the invasion in 1974, on the seafront.
